Netherlands, Kuinre, Henry III (1294-1304), Sterling, 1.12g, crowned facing bust, +hens´comes. d conre, contraction mark above n in hens, rev. mon eta mon tes, normal n, long cross, pellets in angles (Mayhew 175/178), nearly very fine, a very rare type and an unrecorded variety Estimate £ 200-250 The Lordship of Kuinre was a dependency of the Bishopric of Utrecht. Count Henry III was also Lord of Urk and Emmerood. This coin names Mons as the mint but Kuinre is much further north. provenance Found at Wrine Hill, Cheshire, April 2012 This obverse/reverse combination found on this coin is not recorded by Mayhew. He did record a similar but slightly different coin seen by van der Chijs, which combined the obverse of Mayhew´s type 175 +hen-s´comes. conre (as this coin), with type 177a, mon eta mon tes, with a reverse barred n, not the normal n as on this coin. This makes this new coin a previously unknown variety of the rare Kuinre issued Sterlings.
