First Carlist War: 5% Loan. 1837, certificate for 200 pesos dated 1839, small format piece with attractive scrollwork at left, black, extremely fine. Upon the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833 the crown passed to his wife as Regent for their infant daughter Isabel II. Ferdinand´s brother Charles thought he should be proclaimed King and war broke out between the two factions which lasted 7 years. Charles successors fought several wars during the 19th century to try to regain the throne but failed each time. This loan was raised to aid Charles attempt and was payable on his entry to Madrid.
