Auction: 11038 - Great Britain stamps
Lot: 112
Great Britain 1840 One Penny Black Plate IV EH, good to large margins, just tied at top and at right by black Maltese Cross, on 1840 (31 Aug,) entire letter from London to Chelmsford, with clear datestamp on reverse, opening well for exhibition (the first day of use of the black Maltese Cross), the entire beautifully written and illustrated on two of the pages by ten lovely pen and ink sketches; some folds strengthened by archival tape, the adhesive with surface fault at upper-left, though of good appearance. One of only eight recorded entires of the first day of the Two Penny Post black ink trial and, despite the slightly faulty adhesive, a major rarity and a delightful hand illustrated entire.
