Victoria Travelling Post Offices The Benalla Line Using Numbers 5, 6, 12 and 13 T.P.O. No. 5 1873 (5 June) large part entire to Melbourne, bearing Bell 2d. cancelled with "up train/m.g.3" (apparently) and showing, on reverse, fine "up train/m.g.5" small c.d.s. (crossed by filing crease though the earliest recorded date of use and ex Pack), 1885 (20 May) 1d. pink card from Wangaratta to Melbourne cancelled with two "up train/m.g.5" small c.d.s., 1889 (10 Dec.) 1d. maroon card from Seymour to Yea (near Tallarook) cancelled with superb "up train/m.g.5/t.p.o/5" duplex and with Tallarook (10.12) and Yea (11.12) c.d.s. on reverse, 1898 1/2d. yellow wrapper to Melbourne and cancelled with "up train/m.g.5" small c.d.s., and 1895 (29 Mar.) large Chief Secretary frank front to Kilmore cancelled with fine "down train/m.g.5" small octagonal d.s.; a few small faults though a generally attractive group Estimate £ 180-200 Note: The railway was opened to Benalla in July 1873 and in November of the same year was extended to Wodonga. A further extension took place in June 1883 to Albury on the New South Wales border. Mail and passengers had to be transferred at this point due to the different gauges of the railways in Victoria and New South Wales at this time
