1840 One Penny Black Plate Ib Unused Plate 1 was put to press without being hardened and quickly began to show significant signs of wear. The whole plate required restoration and it is thought that the transfer roller impressions which had been used to lay down plate 2 were employed. This procedure had the effect of modifying the character of the left star. Plate Ia shows the broken rays at 10 o´clock and 5 o´clock; plates Ib and II show the broken rays and 10 o´clock and 7 o´clock The earliest know date of used is 12th June 1840. This plate was destroyed on 11th December 1841 Shades range from intense black to black GC, in the black shade, good to very large margins, large part original gum; a few minor surface scuffs.
