Line Engraved Essays and Proofs 1850 Prince Consort Essay The unfinished imperforate proof, printed in dull grey-blue, with full original gum; some gum wrinkling or creasing with a couple of trivial edge imperfections. A fine example of this very rare essay. S.G. DP71 (1), £30,000 Estimate £ 12,000-15,000 These essays were prepared by Henry Archer in connection with his offer to produce surface printed postage stamps and perforate them at more favorable terms then the existing contract with Perkins, Bacon. Edwin Hill, the supervisor in the Stamp Department at Somerset House, advised against the use of the Queen´s head. Therefore Archer chose to use the head of the Prince Consort. The stamps were printed in sheets of thirty-six (three rows of twelve)
