Line Engraved Essays and Proofs The "Rainbow" Colour Trials State 1: In black [7], good to large margins, fresh and fine. S.G. Spec. DP20, £14,000 Estimate £ 4,000-5,000 The ´Rainbow´ Trial sheets were produced by Perkins, Bacon for experiments on cancellation inks and attempts to remove postmarks. Different combinations of ink for printing the stamps and the postmarks were used. State 1 was produced in late May 1840 State 2 was produced May - June until August 1840 State 3 was produced in September 1840 The top right corner was covered in wax to leave that corner blank, preventing any confusion with the issued stamps
