Lot: 1024
Line Engraved Essays and Proofs The Accepted Die for the One Penny Stamp, Die I March 1840, with "postage" and "one penny" and upper corner stars added, die proof in black on India paper; the original proof reduced and with the backing card (affixed with hinge); some slight peripheral faults, well away from the design, in no way detracting from the fine appearance of this pivotal proof which had reached the stage where official approval could be given to the final design for the worlds first Postage Stamp, the one penny black. A highly important exhibition rarity, of which very few examples exist. S.G. Spec. DP17b, £250,000 Estimate £ 120,000-150,000 provenance: "TES", October 1995
