Falkland Islands 1914 (9 Aug.) unstamped envelope from Lt. Wilhelm Canaris on board the S.M.S. Dresden of Vice-Admiral Graf von Spee´s East Asiatic Squadron, to his father in Germany, showing two "kais. deutsche/marine-/schiffspost/no 66" c.d.s. and boxed "Feldpostbrief" h.s. in violet. Photo Estimate £ 250-300 Note: This cover is written a few weeks before the battles of Coronel (1 Nov.) and of the Falkland Islands (8 Dec.) and his subsequent capture by Chilean authorities on 14 March. The "Dresden" was later caught at the Juan Fernandez Islands, Chile. Lt. Canaris, who was serving on the "Dresden", later boarded H.M.S. "Glasgow" and during negotiations the "Dresden" was scuttled. Canaris later escaped to Germany where he subsequently became Admiral of the Third Reich and head of the Abwehr (German Military Intelligence) from 1935 until 1944.
