† Great Britain Postal History Newspapers The Times, July 24, 1839, a feature on page 3, "Penny Postage", details of a petition to the House of Lords signed by the mayor and upwards of 12,500 of the merchants of the City of London, which apparently was signed within 12 hours. The petition stated that the present rates of postage were prejudicial to the interests of commerce. The costs of mail coach and train are compared as well as the costs of overseas mail sent by ship and gives details of the speeches made by various Lords.
