Great Britain Postal History 1840 (4 May-7 July), The Newcastle Stamp Office Archive comprising five items: 1 - 1840 (4 May) entire to Messrs Thorp Dickson Stamp Office Alnwick from Stamp Office Newcastle giving details of the stamps and Mulready´s to be issued and with wholesale and retail prices, accounting, with fascinating details and concluding "I think I have now given you pretty nearly the substance of the letter I have received on the subject of the Postage Stamps, but no doubt every particular will be sent you by the Board with the Stamps. I have no idea of the size or form of the stamps & am quite at a loss how to prepare you for their storage" 2 - A ledger sheet endorsed "Mr. Dicksons Form for keeping Postage Stamps May 7 - 1840" giving details of sales of stamps and Mulready´s (wholesale and retail), including twenty 1840 2d. blues in the 6th. May column 3 - 1840 (11 May) entire without markings from Stamp Office Newcastle to Messrs. Thorp and Dickson contents including I have to inform you that you will shortly be supplied with with a stock of Postage Stamps and I am directed by the board to furnish you with the following information and instructions respecting the sale etc of such stamps..." and many other fascinating details 4 - A similarly addressed entire but dated 15 May 1840 regarding Licenses for selling stamps 5 - An entire letter from the Stamp Office Newcastle dated 7 July 1840 to Messrs. Thorp and Dickson bearing a fine 1840 1d. plate V with red Maltese Cross cancellation being an "Account of Sale of Postage Stamps"; fine. An unrecorded and highly important archive, not previously offered on the open market, offering an intimate and detailed insight into the introduction of the first postage stamps, covers and envelopes.
