Four: Shipwright Lieutenant S.T. Sadler, Royal Navy Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, one clasp, Defence of Ladysmith (148053 Carp-Mate: S.T. Sadler, H.M.S. Powerful), impressed naming; 1914-15 Star (Ch. Carpr. S.T. Sadler, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Cd. Shpt. S.T. Sadler. R.N.), light contact marks, therefore very fine or better (4) Estimate £ 500-700 Shipwright Lieutenant Samuel Thomas Sadler (1866-1947) born Gosport, Hampshire; joined Royal Navy as a Shipwright,1889; served in H.M.S. Powerful, 8.6.1897-6.6.1900; indeed it is interesting to speculate whether Sadler´s advancement to Carpenter in June 1900 was in recognition of special services during the defence of Ladysmith; Sadler was serving in H.M.S. St. Vincent (battleship) at the outbreak of the Great War, and having been advanced to Chief Carpenter (Commissioned Shipwright) in June 1915, was present in her at the Battle of Jutland, 31st May-1st June 1916; ended the War with an appointment in the submarine depot ship Maidstone and was advanced to Shipwright Lieutenant on his retirement in February 1920; he was granted a Greenwich Hospital Pension in March 1943.
