Royal Humane Society, small silver medal, successful (Simon Tate, Nov: 20, 1903), with integral top silver riband buckle, extremely fine, in Elkington, London, fitted case of issue Estimate £ 300-350 Mr. Simon Tate, a mining engineer of Trimden Grange, and the Agent for Messrs. Walter Scott, Ltd., was awarded the Royal Humane Society silver medal for gallantry in saving the life of Mr. Richardson, a miner at the Sacriston Colliery, Co. Durham, who had been entombed in the mine for over 90 hours. For this action six Royal Humane Society silver medals were awarded to the rescue party, who worked continuously from the evening of Monday 16th November until Friday 20th November 1903, when Richardson was finally rescued, not much the worse from his long imprisonment.
