Motor Cycling Club, six gold prize medals awarded to W. P. Tippett, London - Edinburgh - London (3), May 24th, 25th and 27th 1912 (15ct., 15.15g.), 9th and 10th May 1913 motor cycle (9ct., 12.03g.), May 29th and 30th and June 1st 1914 (15ct., 14.49g.), London - Lands End - London (1), April 11th and 13th 1914 (hallmarks indistinct, 12.66g.), London - Exeter - London (2), 26th and 27th December 1911 motor cycle (without hallmark, 12.13g.), and Dec 27th and 28th 1912 (9ct., 12.10g.), very fine, a rare group of early motor cycling medals (6) Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 The Motor Cycling Club was founded in 1901 and immediately started organising race meetings, first at Crystal Palace, then at Brooklands. It staged three long distance ´reliability´ trials, to Edinburgh (inaugurated 1904), Lands End (1908), and Exeter (1910). These trials, known as the ´classic reliability trials´ are still staged by the MCC today. To win a gold medal an entrant has to climb every ´non stop´ hill and keep to a time schedule. Entrants who fail one hill qualify for a silver medal, and those who fail two hills qualify for a bronze medal.
