Lot: 2

Great Britain Postal History 1708 (7 Sept.) entire letter from George Hicks (Chaplain to James II and Dean of Worcester) to "Madam Hopton at her house in Hereford" with a superb strike of the very rare "ormond/street" receiving house handstamp on reverse (opening perfectly for display). The first year of use of this handstamp and the finest known example. An interesting and significant letter relating to the Nonjuring Church of England, shedding new light of the relationship between Hickes and Suzanna Hopton. The two were close friends: Hickes spent time hiding in Hobton´s house and in 1710 published an earlier letter by her (to which he refers in this letter), in which she explained her conversion from the Roman to the Anglican church.
