A Scarce Officer´s ´American Frigate Action´ N.G.S. to Lieutenant Charles Rawdon, Royal Navy, Who Was Present as Midshipman in H.M.S. Phoebe During the Capture of the 32 Gun Frigate Essex, Off Valparaiso Harbour, Chile, 28.3.1814 Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, Phoebe 28 March 1814, Algiers (C.W. Rawdon, Midshipman.), nearly extremely fine, one of only two medals issued with this combination of clasps Estimate £ 10,000-15,000 Charles Rawdon served as Boy in H.M.S. Phoebe 30 guns (Captain J. Hillyar) in concert with H.M.S. Cherub 18 guns (Captain T.T. Tucker) at the capture of the American 32 gun frigate Essex, off Valparaiso Harbour, Chile, 28.3.1814; the British losses were 4 men killed and 7 wounded, with the Americans suffering 24 killed and 45 wounded; Rawdon later served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Minden for the combined attack on Algiers by the English and Dutch fleets, 27.8.1816. Approximately 31 ´Phoebe 28 March 1814´ clasps issued Lieutenant Charles Wyndham Rawdon joined the Royal Navy, June 1812, and initially served in H.M.S. Antelope (Captain J. Carpenter, flag ship of Sir John T. Duckworth), off Newfoundland; served with the Phoebe in South America, February 1813-January 1815; after service in H.M.S. Cornwallis (flag ship of Sir George Burlton) in the East Indies, he removed to H.M.S. Doris (Captains R. O´Brien and J. Harper), September 1815; returned to England and was appointed to H.M.S. Minden (Captain. W. Paterson), March 1816; after serving during the bombardment of Algiers, he proceeded to India; returning home as a Supernumerary in H.M.S. Malabar, Rawdon was ordered to South America in H.M.S. Conway (Captain B. Hall), Spring 1820; nominated Acting-Lieutenant December 1821; Lieutenant the following year.
