Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Java (John Gulley.), edge bruising, therefore very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 John Gulley served as Private, Royal Marines in H.M.S. Nisus during the assistance given by the Navy in the capture of the island of Java, July-18th September 1811. John Gulley, born Wells, Somerset; enlisted as a Boy Marine into the Plymouth Division of Marines, No.39 Company, September 1809; served in H.M.S. Nisus from May 1810; Private 3rd Class January 1811; invalided home from Cape of Good Hope, 17.12.1812, the muster states, ´invalided into H.M. Store Ship Porpoise for passage to England.´; discharged 8.2.1819, in consequence of ´a ruptured right side.´ Provenance: Loxley Collection October 1949
