Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Martinique (John Hawksford.), very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 John Hawksford served as Private, Royal Marines in H.M.S. Neptune as part of the combined naval and military assault and capture of the French-held island of Martinique in the Caribbean Sea, 24.2.1809. The naval element of this operation was under the command of Rear Admiral A.I. Cochrane who flew his flag in H.M.S. Neptune. Provenance: Glendining November 1922 Sotheby March 1987
