Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Virginie 19 May 1808 (Fred. Withey.), suspension slack, edge bruise, very fine Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Frederick Withey (Greenwich Hospital roll gives ´Whithy´) served as Private, Royal Marines in H.M.S. Virginie for the capture of the Dutch 36-gun frigate Guelderland in the Western Approaches, 19.5.1808. After a chase of several hours the Virginie (Commander E. Brace) came up with the Dutch frigate and hailed her to surrender. On her refusal action commenced and after having her masts and bowsprit shot away the Guelderland eventually struck her colours. Approximately 21 clasps issued for this action, of which only Withey and 10 others have unique names upon the roll. Provenance: Glendining July 1959 Spink December 1988
