Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Stately 22 March 1808 (John Burgoyne.), good very fine Estimate £ 4,000-4,500 John Burgoyne served as Boy in H.M.S. Stately when she and H.M.S. Nassau jointly engaged and destroyed the Danish 74-gun ship of the line Prinds Christian Frederick off Grenaa, Coast of Jutland, Denmark, 22.3.1808. After a running fight, the Dane, less than 500 yards from the shore struck her colours, but before possession could be taken of her, the enemy ship grounded. Throughout the night prisoners were removed from the stricken vessel, however, it was found impossible to refloat her. On the evening of the 23rd, the Prinds Christian Frederick was set on fire by her captors and shortly after blew up, just as a number of Danish Militia were approaching the area with artillery. Approximately 31 ´Stately 22 March 1808´ clasps issued for this action. John Burgoyne, born Carlisle; joined the Ship´s Company of the Stately as a Boy 3rd Class, aged 12, 3.3.1808, just three weeks before the action with the Prinds Christian Frederick; he advanced to Boy 2nd Class, before being discharged ashore in November 1812.
