Gibraltar Spanish Stamps used from Gibraltar From 1850, the Spanish inland rate was 6 cuartos for stamped letters and 8c. for unstamped. Gibraltarians obtained Spanish stamps to take advantage of the lower rate. 1. 1852 (13 Apr.) entire to Madrid, bearing 1852 6c. tied by "parilla" and showing "de gibr/s. roque/anda baxa" h.s. in red alongside (crossed by vertical filing crease). 2. 1858 (15 Feb.) entire letter from Swatow to Cadiz, showing framed "forwarded/by/ja speed" in blue at lower left and bearing 1853 6c. tied by "parilla" at San Roque. 3. 1858 (3 May) entire letter from Cadiz to Gibraltar, bearing uncancelled 1856 4c. and showing Gibraltar arrival c.d.s. (4.5; touched by horizontal filing crease) and handstruck "2d", both in blue. 4. 1858 (23 Dec.) entire to Cadiz, marked "per Ligero", bearing 1856 4c. in combination with GB 2d., the latter cancelled "G" and both cancelled with "rueda" on arrival at Cadiz, showing blue Gibraltar c.d.s. alongside and firm´s oval cachet at lower left with arrival d.s. (26.12) on reverse. Note: The ship letter fee of 2d. was usually paid in cash but, occasionally, was prepaid with G.B. stamps. 5. 1859 (4 July) entire letter to Cadiz, marked "p Estafeta", bearing 1856 4c. strip of five (touched at top) tied by three strikes of "rueda" at San Roque. 6. 1862 (16 July) entire letter (a little soiled), headed with print of Gibraltar from the sea, to Marseilles, bearing 1860 12c. tied by San Roque "rueda", showing Gibraltar c.d.s., St. Jean de Luz entry d.s. (22.7) and handstruck "5c" alongside with arrival datestamp (24.7) on reverse. 7. 1872 (24 June) front to Malta, bearing G.B. 4d. tied by "A26" obliterator, in combination with 1870 200m., showing Gibraltar c.d.s. alongside and Cadiz transit d.s.; recipient´s notation across most of face panel and the adhesives. 8. 1873 (6 Oct.) unstamped entire letter to Cadiz, marked on reverse "No stamps available in the tobacco shop of this town" (in Spanish), the letter was then taken to the town hall of San Roque where the Mayor applied his seal on reverse for onward delivery having been paid in cash at the San Roque Post Office.
