Great Britain 1840 Mulready One Penny Lettersheets Stereo obscured, dated 1840 (10 Oct.), written from Calais and addressed to Dublin, carried privately by the ship´s master to London and posted as an inland letter, red Maltese Cross cancellation to the right of Britannia (contrary to regulations) and black "Tooley-St." alongside, with contents which include "send your letter to me under such a cover as this to the master of the ship inn, Dover, with a request that he will put it into the French post and I will get it for 3d. if it is not too large". The letter sheet slightly soiled and with light horizontal and vertical folds, fine. A very rare and early example of avoidance of full postal duty. Photo Estimate £ 320-380
