India, Mysore, Tipu Sultan (1782-99), 1/4-Rupee, 2.77g, AM1215, ry.5, Muhammad / huwa as-sultan / al-waheed /al-adil, sanah 1215, rev. Persian letter "he" with regnal year 5 in loop of letter, surrounded by eight clusters of beads (obv. KM.D125; Henderson 69, rev. similar to that of pagodas of this date, cf. KM.129; Henderson 15), good extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 700-800 This rare piece appears to be either a trial for Tipu´s Quarter Rupee or Baqari coin, or one of the earliest examples of this denomination intended for circulation. A similar coin is held in the Ashmolean Museum collection. In common with Tipu´s early pagoda coins it has no mint name, but its style is similar to that of Double Rupees of Calicut
