Edward the Martyr (975-978), Penny, 1.48g, sole type, Ipswich, Waltferth, draped, diademed bust left, +eadþeard rex angox, rev. +þaltferð m-o gipz, cross pattée within inner circle (N.763; S.1142), slight weakness on shoulder, well struck, a new moneyer for this issue, probably the finest known example for this ruler for this mint, almost extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 3,500-4,500 provenance Found Treswell, Notts., April 2010 Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, EMC2010.0166 JC Sadler in his ´The Ipswich Mint, c.973-1210´, vol 1, lists four coins for Edward the Martyr, two by the moneyer Leofric and two by Wilebeart. This new coin by Waltferth adds a fifth coin and a third moneyer. Waltferth is also known as an Ipswich moneyer for Aethelred II´s first hand coins.
