Edward the Confessor, Penny, 1.61g, heavy issue expanding cross type, Wilton, Aelfwold, diademed bust left, sceptre before, rev. voided short cross with expanding limbs joined at base by two circles +aelfpold on piltvnee (N.823; S.1177), rare mint for this issue, good very fine Estimate £ 350-450 provenance Mack Collection, see SCBI 20, 1183 Bt. Seaby, 5 October 1958 With Mack tickets including one which states ex Montagu collection, but this not proven. SCBI 20/1183 lists this coin incorrectly as by Aelfwine, but the coin illustrated is this coin. Wilton is recorded for five coins for the expanding cross heavy issue.
