London Gazette No. 13743 Naik Godhu Ram, 8th Punjab Regiment ´In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma.´ The recommendation states: ´On the 3rd February 1943, Naik Godhu Ram was a section commander of a fighting patrol, strength one platoon, which was moving through the dense jungle when it was ambushed by a Japanese platoon dug into the crest of a steep jungle-covered cliff face. One section was heavily grenaded and suffered heavy casualties. Naik Godhu Ram took up a position and covered the extrication of the casualties. During this action he observed two weapon pits on the crest of the cliff feature, from which the enemy were firing and hurling grenades. On his own initiative, Naik Godhu Ram gave the order to "fix bayonets" and led his section in a charge up the difficult cliff face at the enemy position. Three Japs fled and two were killed. Naik Godhu Ram occupied the weapon pit but was immediately grenaded and raked with light machine-gun fire which resulted in more casualties. On receiving the order to withdraw the Naik covered the position carrying with him the dead sepoy. This NCO displayed dash and courage of the highest order. His initiative and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all ranks engaged in this action.´
