SPINK LONDON |On the 28th April, Spink is excited to be holding a sale of British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals. The sale will also contain the remaining coins from the Academic Collection of Lord Stewartby. This will be an excellent opportunity to own something from his amazing collection.

However, the backbone of this auction is a superior collection of British coinage, abounding in outstanding pennies of Alfred the Great, Offa and Harold II. The prize of this April's hammered coins, however, is lot 144, the gold sovereign of Edward VI. This masterpiece displays a seldom seen level of brilliant red toning on its reverse, a rarer mintmark and an overall high grade.

144

Lot 144, estimated: £12,000 - £15,000

Besides the hammered specimens included in this sale, also offered is a highly desirable assemblage of early milled British coins, some of the last remaining of the collection of Lord Stewartby. The obvious piece to discuss here is Lot 1950, the exquisite Oliver Cromwell crown of 1658. This example boasts not only a very fine grade or better, but was obviously produced early enough that the die crack which so hinders later examples is of a rarely-seen small size. These factors combined form a handsome and enviable coin which deserves the utmost collector attention.

1950

Lot 1950, estimated: £5,000 - £6,000

Additionally, the sale contains a stunning range of later milled coins. Offered for sale are such rarities as an 1893 proof halfcrown with spectacular toning, a William IV pattern crown, and not one, not two, not even three, but four Victoria Gothic crowns! If there is a jewel in our gothic crown it is lot 213, our immaculate plain edged proof, which stands out amongst the four.

213

Lot 213, estimated £3,500 - £4,500

This upcoming sale includes many outstanding coins, and the opportunity to own them should not be missed! The sale will begin at 12pm noon on the 28th in London.
