SPINK USA | Spink USA's "Collector's Series Sale" this January 27-28, 2016 will usher in the New Year with a large offering of Portuguese and Brazilian coins, a collection of medals and artefacts related to the Easter Rebellion and Ireland's struggle for independence, selections of Anglo-Gallic coins, Renaissance and Russian medals, and myriad other world coins and medals. The sale, which will be held, in New York, also features a broad range of world paper money, US coins, exonumia and currency; important autographs and documents from the Diana Herzog Collection and selections from the John E. Herzog Collection of US Stocks and Bonds. "This is a diverse, eclectic and very collector-friendly sale," said Spink USA senior numismatist Gregory J. Cole.

Featuring a number of rarities, the sale's over 170 lots of Portugal, its colonies and Brazil range from medieval to the Republic period. Portugal's first coins are represented by nine different Dinheiro of Dom Afonso Henriques - Afonso I "the Conqueror (1139-1185), including an important and one of only a few known Seal of Solomon (Star of David) types (lot 361) in Extremely Fine, estimated at $10,000 to 15,000. Other rarities include an Extremely Fine Real Grosso of Afonso V (1438-1481) with his Castilian titles (lot 395), an Evora mint 400 Reis of Joao IV (1640-1656), Choice AU (lot 452) and a handsome 1727 Dobra (lot 470).

Marking the Centennial of Ireland's Easter Rebellion, the Liberty Collection's 72 lots of medals and artefacts ranging from an Irish Citizen Army slouch hat to collar badges and a 1916 Sin Fein Rebellion Handbook, chronicles the uprising and Ireland's voyage to freedom. Included are a rare 1916 'Casualty' Medal awarded to Thomas O'Reilly, Dublin Brigade, GPO Garrison, and a 1916 medals group to Sean O'Kelly who served as staff captain to Pádraig Pearse in the General Post Office Garrison, and later as President of Ireland (lot 731).

The sale's selection of Anglo-Gallic coinage features major rarities such as a Choice Edward III Gros au Léopard, Elias 59, perhaps the finest specimen ever offered in public auction (lot 284); an Edward III Double, Elias 124, in Very Fine, only the second specimen ever offered in public auction (lot 288) and a Henry of Lancaster Bergerac Gros à la couronne, Elias 130var., ex Joffre and ex Steve Ford Collections (lot 296). Asian coinage is highlighted by a pair of extremely rare VOC emergency issue Crowns for the Netherlands East Indies - 1645, and 1646, grading About Extremely Fine and AU (lots 680 and 681), the later unique. World medals, meanwhile, include by an impressive 1433 Pisanelli bronze of Gianfrancesco I Gonzaga, 19th century cast (lot 797) and a superb Cardinal Richelieu 1630 Bronze by Jean Warin (lot 802). The section also offers a nice run of Napoleonic and World War I medals.

A solid array of ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coinage, a pleasing group of Russian medals, and Italian States issues rounds out the sales' some 854 World Coins and Medals. World paper money is represented by over 250 lots, including a pair of rare 1910 Russo-Asiatic Bank, Harbin Branch 50 and 100 Dollars (lots 1055 and 1056), two sets of 1922 Lithuanian Specimen issues (lots 1153, 1154) and a goodly smattering of Bradbury Wilkinson Printer's Archival Photo Essays for various proposed-but-never-accepted banknote designs.  The US section includes a large group of Civil War exonumia, two new to the census Confederate T-59 Inverted back $10 notes (lots 1278, 1279), and the finest known 1922 $50 Gold Certificate, Fr. 1200, graded PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ (lot 1334).

Following paper money on Day Two of the Sale is an important offering of autographs and documents: The Diana Herzog Collection of English Writes, Poets and Notables. Among the many stars of this collection is a remarkable content 1801 letter from Lord Nelson to Lady Hamilton in which he bemoans Sir Thomas' lording over him and concludes with his advice to Lady Hamilton to "live pretty, and keep a pig" (lot 1413), estimated at $15,000 to 25,000.

The sale concludes with a strong stocks and bonds section, principally selections from the John E. Herzog Collection. Among the many rarities here is a spectacular 1854 hand-colored Cocos Island Treasure Company stock certificate (lot 1545), a War of 1812 "Seaman's Share" of net proceeds and prizes from the privateer brig "Grand Turk" (lot 1547), a very rare 1945 Augusta National Golf Club certificate signed by Bobby Jones (lot 1563) and an 1868 certificate from The Soldiers Business, Messenger and Dispatch Co. -which provided employment to disabled Civil War veterans (lot 1579).
