Spink to Offer Outstanding Collection of British Philately
On 25th September 2014, Spink London will offer a range of exceptional British philately from the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V, specifically selected from the Vestey Collection and sold by order of the Trustees.
Opening with an outstanding selection of important items from Queen Victoria, Spink will offer the famous 1840 2d. Bisect with both halves of the same stamp, one on its original cover and the other on a separate piece. With only 5 examples of this rare Bisect, and only two being on cover, this is an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire both halves of this highly sought after piece. (Lot 4, estimated £80,000)
Other highlights of Queen Victoria include a stunning example of the V.R. Official in a block of 6 (Lot 2, estimate £80,000), said to be one of the finest mint singles 'ever offered' of an 1840 2d. Blue (Lot 3, estimate £20,000) and imprimaturs of the 1841 1d. Red-Brown (Lots 5 - 11, estimate range from £400 - £12,000).
Amongst the other select pieces on offer is a session of King Edward VII, featuring a very fine example of the very rare 2d. Tyrian Plum. Due to the death of King Edward on 6th May 1910, it was decided not to proceed with this issue, so stocks of the 2d. Tyrian Plum were destroyed with only few surviving from the official records. (Lot 35, estimated £50,000)
Featured towards the end of the sale is a collection of philately from King George V, featuring 100 lots of Seahorse issues, with die proofs in colour variations, duplicated shades and multiples from different printers (including Waterlow, De la Rue and Bradbury Wilkinson). All are selected for auction due to their fine appearance (Lots 100 - 200, estimates range from £80 - £20,000).
Also on offer is the ever popular 1935 Silver Jubilee 2½d. Prussian blue error of colour unmounted mint. With very few multiples of this rare and highly desirable issue existing today, this example is in a block of four from the left margin and shows part of the margin arrow (Lot 211, estimated £28,000).
