Postal History
1859 (5 Jan.) envelope from Gibraltar addressed to England bearing 1d. (faulty) cancelled by 'G' handstamp and with adjacent gibraltar c.d.s. in blue, the most unusual content about the detailed description of the execution of a murder: ...The above is a pen and ink drawing of the Gallow. N.1 are the steps to the scaffold. N.2 is the drop before the bolt is drawn...N.3 is the noose..N.8 is the coffin placed before the scaffold so that the prisoner sees it before being hung. N.9 is the rope...while the priest was talking to him the fatal bolt was drawn... An incredible piece of dark history. Photo
