1038

Lot 1038, estimated: $75,000

In 1911, the publisher William Randolph Hearst offered a US$50,000 prize to the first aviator to fly coast to coast in less than 30 days. Calbraith Perry Rodgers took up the challenge, and sponsored by J. Ogden Armour, he named his privately owned Wright airplane, a Wright Model B after Armour's new grape soft drink,Vin Fiz.

In addition to the Vin Fiz endorsement, Mabel Rodgers used the flight to promote an airmail service, and sold special 25-cent postage stamps for items to be carried on the aeroplane. They were semi-official; the Post Office tolerated them, but insisted that mail carry regular stamps in addition. The stamps were inscribed with "RODGERS AERIAL POST" and "VIN FIZ FLYER", with a picture of the airplane in the centre. Spink are delighted to be offering such a wonderful rarity this November.

The U.S. Possessions is quite strong with rarities from Canal Zone, Hawaii and Philippines. The auction concludes with over 40 lots of collections. Spink looks forward to seeing you there.
