1868 (17 Feb.) blue envelope to Shanghai with printed "Via Marseilles" and manuscript "per French Mail" bearing G.B. 1/- green plate 6 and 4d. vermilion plate 9 tied by London District "48" obliterator of Shoreditch and with "PD" in oval and English Mail Calais transit c.d.s.; the reverse with square London despatch and "shanghai/bau francais" c.d.s. (5.4). With the original enclosure from Smith Elder & Co. concerning the sale of a flute for £8 to Keith, Prowse & Co. An interesting cover, very unusual to be sent by French packet instead of the usual British packet. Photo

This letter was sent by the French packet 'Moeris' from Marseilles, thence by 'Imperatrice' and 'Dupleix' from Hong Kong to Shanghai. The letter missed the sailing of the 'Poonah' by one day, which had left on the 4th April. The next departure to Marseilles would not have been until 12th April, so the French ship 'Moeris' was used, leaving on the 5th April
