Auction: 21004 - The Sir Rodney Sweetnam KCVO CBE Collection of English Gold Coins and Other Properties - Conducted behind closed doors
Lot: 42

William III (1694-1702), 'Fine-Work' Two-Guineas, 1701, laureate head right, no stop after GRA, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned ornamental sceptres in angles, edge obliquely milled, 16.74g, 6h (Spink 3457; Schneider II, 482; MCE 173; Stratos 157), adjustment to hair and corresponding area of reverse, and flecking before nose, otherwise lustrous, almost extremely fine, in NGC 'Sweetnam' holder, graded AU58 (Cert. #5878635-007)

The superlative example from our 'Stratos' Sale (15 September 2020), carried a stellar MS63 holder and brought a record-breaking £45,600 ($59,500). Whilst the present piece carries a less exalted third-party grade, the flashy fields are undeniably reminiscent of the Chalaza coin.
