Franked Postal History
General French Colonies "Eagle" Issue - Military Mail
1867 (26 Jan.) envelope from Fort de France to Gevrey-Chambertin, struck by blue "Comdt. la Garde/de la Martinique" military cachet confirming the 20c. concessionary rate applied and paid with 5c. strip of four, margins ranging from complete to very large, tied by "mqe" lozenges, with alongside despatch c.d.s. and blue "corr.d.arm./fort-de-france" octagonal datestamp, the reverse exhibiting "cor.d.armées/lig. b paq. n° 3" c.d.s. (Salles 1449/3) with transits and arrival. Due to confusion over the cholera epidemic at St. Thomas, the "Imperatrice Eugenie" sailed from Fort de France on 26 January to St. Nazaire. A rare military correspondence showing an unusual franking to pay the 20c. concessionary rate and combining scarce postmarks. Roumet Certificate (2014). Maury 2. Photo
