French Colonies - Martinique. The Brian Brookes Collection
Postal History
The Royal Packet Service
Undated envelope from Guadeloupe to Metz, showing small "Guadeloupe" h.s. with "saujon" h.s. below and charged 20 sous in red on reverse; the envelope with three small punctures at left. Photo

Note: Since it was imposed upon Captains under pain of strong sanctions to land mail at the first port or first landing place in France, it was necessary to identify the place of departure for the correct rate to be charged. This cover should have included the word "Colonies" with the town handstamp. This landing at Saujon was probably the only time that mail was landed there.
