China Japanese Occupation Wei-Hai Wei 1895 (6 Apr.) envelope from a member of 4th Company, 2nd Artillery Regiment, 2nd Army at "Yinjiatung, Shantung Province, Occupied China" to Tochigi Prefecture, Japan and cancelled by a fine strike of F.P.O. no.2, 2nd Army, Liaotung Peninsular c.d.s. in red. The envelope is without enclosure, and was written on 5th April, the first day of the campaign to land the Weihaiwei Occupation Force on the peninsular. There was not a F.P.O. at this time, even on Liu Kung Tau. An extremely rare cover, the earliest recorded of this part of the campaign and an important showpiece for any collector of Wei-Hai-Wei. Photo Estimate HK$ 200,000-250,000 The battle for Wei-Hai-Wei commenced on 20th January 1895 and concluded with the Chinese surrender on 14th February. The Japanese remained garrisoned on the island of Liu Kung Tau while hostilities continued elsewhere in the region. The Japanese government decided to occupy the mainland of the peninsular and on 1st April 1895 formed the Weihaiwei Occupation Force. On the 5th April they landed on the mainland, where they remained until 23rd May. At a later date the 1st Army used F.P.O. no. 20 in this region.
