SPINK TO HOLD WORLD RARITIES AUCTION AT WASHINGTON 2006 EXHIBITION

1st June Sale Will Focus on Important Items to Enhance Great Collections

Spink are pleased to announce a significant occasion during the forthcoming International Exhibition in Washington 2006. A select gathering of some 150 items with an emphasis on the major collecting areas will be gathered for our discerning clients. Washington will be the hosts for a great cross-section of the philatelists of the world and we believe that this will present a unique occasion to participate in the buying and selling of great rarities. The philatelic market has enjoyed significant forward momentum in the last two years and with the fluctuation of exchange rates and the seemingly inexorable rise in oil prices, it seems that the formation of collectables makes eminent sense during these troubled times.

Spink are actively seeking consignments for this prestigious event and below we illustrate some of the fine items already consigned. If you wish to participate in this one off occasion, please contact any of our experts as listed below and they will be delighted to discuss with you the details of this great event.

SPINK SALE IN WASHINGTON CONTAINS MANY WONDERFUL ITEMS

AUCTION ON THE 1ST JUNE WILL BE ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITION

As the time approaches to finalise entries for the “Important stamps and covers of the world” auction, we are pleased to announce that many significant rarities have been consigned.  Great Britain will contain several notable items including a “First Day Cover”, 1d black used on 6th May 1840 and a mint block of 6 of the 1860 1 ½ d rosy mauve, S.G.53a, the largest known multiple.

British Guiana will be the most valuable section as it includes no less than the “Miss Rose” cover, probably the most famous in all philately.  It bears a pair of the 2c rose, S.G.1, but most importantly type C being the only two examples recorded of the 10 stamps existing of the 2c.  The other 8 being type B.  Likewise included is a single example of the 2c, this being type B and the only fine copy available to collectors.  This particular item has not been offered in auction since the Ferrary sales in the early 1920’s.  15 other lots of “Cottonreels” will be present making this the most important gathering of these rarities in many years.

Countries from “A to Z” will be represented and we have already observed interesting pieces from Australia through to Zanzibar. Bermuda has a “Postmaster stamp” (1d) carmine-red on bluish laid paper unused.
Canada has a mint block of 6  of the 1959 St. Lawrence Seaway 5c red and blue, inverted centre,  and a fine copy of the first printing of the 1859 10c black brown, unused, S.G.33.  Denmark has a combination cover of the 1855 2 rbs blue with a strip of 5 of the 4s. The Falkland Islands an example of the 1964 6d H. M. S Glasgow error inserted instead of  H. M. S. Kent S.G.216a. Mauritius has several items including two covers from the Caspary collection bearing the 1848 2d value, very early impressions one with the “Penoe” error to Bordeaux.

German States contains several interesting items including from Saxony, a marginal horizontal pair of the 1850 3 pf brown red, one of two known, and a pair on front of cover previously in the Amundsen and Boker collections.  Finally there will be some wonderful pieces from the host country the United States.  Here there are early “Revolutionary” Postal History items, a marvellous 1893 $5 Columbian never hinged plate strip of 4 and two examples of the famous 1918 24c Airmail inverted centre, positions 1 and 100.  Most unusually two examples from each corner of the sheet !

This should excite the large gathering of collectors and dealers present and will further strengthen the name of Spink in North America.
