The Pringle Collection of Scottish Banknotes fetches £282,000 at auction - 21 May 2003

The most complete collection of Scottish banknotes formed in recent times fetched £282,000 when it was sold at auction in Edinburgh yesterday The Pringle collection of Scottish banknotes was formed in the early 1980s and Dr Pringle became a very well-known figure in the banknote-collecting world. His great enthusiasm for the subject saw him form many friendships in the field. His collection is one of the most significant to be formed in recent times. Most leading Scottish banks were represented, with pre-sale estimates ranging from £40 to £1,800.

The most expensive individual note sold fetched £5,290

Dr Pringle considered himself to be a custodian of his fine collection rather than simply as its owner. He would spend many long hours studying and sorting his collection, as well as searching for additional and more elusive notes. His interest in Scottish banknotes regularly took him to many of the leading banknote auctions, sales and congresses where he became a familiar figure.

Barnaby Faull, Director of Banknotes at Spink, the auctioneer conducting the sale, commented,
“This result is indicative of the strength of the market for British banknotes of quality at present. The Scottish market is small but perfectly formed, with a strong collector base, many of whom were present at the sale. Spink enjoyed bringing this magnificent collection to the market enormously.”
