(Press Enquiries: Emily Johnston 020 7563 4009)

Left-hand Marginal Multiple from The Governor Cooper Block
Sold for £119,600 on 23rd September 2004

lot 107Spink, the world’s leading auctioneers and dealers of collectables, broke the world record for an Australian philatelic item sold at auction yesterday (23/9/04). The previous record stood at £98,214 for the Sydney View 2d, unique Tete-Beche pair on cover. Spink shattered the record, achieving an outstanding price of £119, 600, doubling the pre-sale estimate of £50,000 to £60,000.

The block of fifteen stamps is known for being one of the greatest items in Australian Philately and has been a part of several prominent stamp collections. The block was cut from a part sheet of thirty-eight stamps presented to Sir Daniel Cooper, Governor of New South Wales and the first President of the London Philatelic Society.

The sale attracted a large number of collectors to Spink’s auction room in Bloomsbury, while several international clients participated via telephone. It was a spectacular sale with outstanding results.
