SPINK ACHIEVES OUTSTANDING RESULTS WITH BLOCKBUSTER PHILATELIC SALES

The Spink auction room was silenced today when the British Honduras 1865 1/- green block of six se-tenant with 6d. rose block of six, estimated at £70,000-80,000, sold for nearly double its estimate at £140,300 – setting a new world record for an item of British Honduras philately sold at auction. The excitement within the room continued with the successive lot, the British Honduras 1865 1d. blue horizontal pair se-tenant with 1/- green horizontal pair, estimated at £30,000-35,000, which sold for well over double its estimate at £78,200. Both lots were sold to a private collector. The sale, comprising a mere 119 lots, was virtually 100% sold realizing £388,980.

The British Honduras sale wrapped up what had been an exciting two days of auctions at Spink. Yesterday, the British Empire sale realized nearly £1million in total with hefty realisations in the specialised areas of the Falkland Islands, Cape of Good Hope and South Africa.
