March 2007 Medal NewsletterAUCTION NEWS Our final auction of 2007, to be held on the 22nd November, features the Important collection of Honours and Awards bestowed upon General Thiebault Charles Maurice Janin (1862-1946), Commanding Officer of the Czech Legion, and one of the three most senior Allied Officers during the Allied Intervention in Russia, 1918-20, who was reported to have carried out of Russia the human remains and effects of Tsar Nicholas II and the Imperial Family. Among his more interesting awards are the following: Russia, Imperial, Order of the White Eagle, An Extremely Rare With Swords set of Insignia, by Eduard, St. Petersburg, sash Badge with Swords, 95mm including crown suspension x 61mm, gold (56 zolotniki) and enamel, manufacturer's marks and 1908-17 kokoshnik mark on eagle's claws, manufacturer's name and mark, and kokoshnik mark on suspension loop; Star with Swords, 95mm, silver (84 zolotniki), silver-gilt, and enamel, manufacturer's name and mark, and 1908-17 kokoshnik mark on reverse, with additional kokoshnik marks on two points of star and retaining pin, minor wear, otherwise extremely fine and rare (2)

A Fine 19th/Early 20th Century Japanese Sword (Katana), Shinogi Zukuri style signed blade with suguha hamon and patterned habaki; mounted with plain tsuba and kashira; golden brown ito surrounding pearl white same, and crane in flight menuki; black lacquer saya with ground mother of pearl inclusions; Kogai and kozuka both bearing crane design; Gokatana also signed; together with curved sword of Middle Eastern origin, with horn handle and cut steel cross piece; green leather scabbard with decorated metal mounts (2)
