Greetings Cyberfriends,

The Coin Department monthly newsletter has returned!

After a very busy January, 2007 is looking to be another exciting year for the Coin Department of Spink. Already we’ve been to two coin fairs - New York, USA on 12th-14th January and York, UK on the 19th-20th January. To get to the York Fair Paul Dawson, David Guest and Megan Gooch battled against gale force winds. Both events went very well. The market for quality coins appears as buoyant as ever. It was good to see so many old clients, unite faces with names and meet new clients for the first time at both events.

Auction News
The third and final part of the Jerry Remick sale was held on 24th January, totalling £263,740 hammer. Strong performers included a Dominican Republic pattern 10-Reales from 1855 which doubled its high estimate and achieved £11,500.  Other highlights included a British Guiana 3-Guilders which sold for £8,625 and another British Guiana coin, this time a 2-Guilders which achieved £4,140.  The three sales of this remarkable collection achieved £1,940,728, which is a fantastic result for Spink and the Remick estate who are donating the proceeds to the Canadian Geological Society according to Mr Remick’s last wishes.

Lot 1467-Dominican Republic, 10 Reales

Lot 1024-British Guiana, 3 Guilders

The consignment deadline has now closed for our general sale of English, Ancient and Foreign coins on March 29th.   Heavy weight pieces include a spectacular Anne Vigo Five-Guineas (S.3561), estimated at £50,000-£60,000 We also have for sale a rare and exciting Russia gold award medal of Peter the Great, made in 1702 from the dies for a half rouble.  It has an estimate of £15,000-£25,000, and a most impressive provenance, originating from the Mickhailovich and Hutten-Czapski collections, with a collector's mark from the latter collection. Only six specimens are recorded.  Auction catalogues will be available some four weeks before the sale and will be published on our website.

We are now taking in consignments for the June 27th coin auction. Please contact Richard Bishop on rbishop@spink.com with any enquiries regarding forthcoming sales.

Coin Fairs
For future fairs and auctions we will be attending please check the following link:  Future events. On the 10th of February we’ll be at our usual table in the upstairs rooms of the London Coin Fair  at the Bloomsbury Holiday Inn. Paul Dawson and David Guest will be at the Dublin Coin Fair on the 17th and 18th February.  We hope to see some of you there (and without adverse weather hampering travel either).

The Numismatic Circular

The February Numismatic Circular is due out near the beginning of the month and we hope that subscribers will find new pieces to augment their collections.  The list includes a good run of later Anglo-Saxon coins, some from scarce rare mints, a selection of tokens and some interesting English patterns.

Click here to subscribe to the Numismatic Circular or to renew your subscription.

We are currently preparing the April Circular which will feature an important collection of Scottish coins including some great rarities.

Have a good month and remember to regularly check our website for new stock additions, catalogues and new ways to bid in our auctions online.  You are of course always welcome to visit our brand new showroom in our London premises which includes a gallery of coins and other collectables.

Kind regards,

Megan Gooch on behalf of the Coin Department
