AUCTION NEWS

Our third and final auction of Orders, Decorations, and Medals in 2006 will take place on the 23rd November.

Highlights of the sale include a 1915 Battle of Festubert Victoria Cross to Private W. Mariner, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, who crept through the German wire entanglements and twice single-handedly attacked with bombs a troublesome enemy machine gun emplacement; he survived over an hour in No Man’s Land, and crawled back under heavy Enemy fire to his own trench; he was subsequently killed in action on the 1st of July 1916.


Lot 222

Notable groups with Orders and Decorations for Gallantry or Distinguished Service include:

A Unique Connaught Rangers group of six comprising an 1897 North West Frontier C.B., an O.B.E., including campaign awards for the Zulu War, Burma, and the North West Frontier to Brigadier-General P.D. Jeffreys, whose gallant services are amply recorded in Despatches for the last two campaigns, Commanded the 2nd Brigade Malakand Field Force at the capture of the Rambat Pass.


Lot 234

The highly important and emotive Light Brigade group of six to Major later General Sir Alexander Low, 4th Light Dragoons, who led the 1st Squadron of his regiment into the enemy guns at Balaklava, where he was personally responsible for cutting down ten or more gunners.


Lot 236

An 1882 Egypt ‘Tel-El-Kebir’ C.B. in a scarce combination group of six to Major-General C.E. Webber, Royal Engineers, mentioned three times for his gallantry and distinguished service during the ‘Central India’ operations of the Indian Mutiny, noted and mentioned for his services in the Zulu War1879 and in Egypt 1882, later he became Co-Founder of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.


Lot 237

The Great War C.M.G., C.B.E., D.S.O. group of ten including the India General Service with clasp Lushai 1889-92, and Ashanti Star 1896 to Brigadier-General F.W. Towsey, West Yorkshire Regiment, who Commanded the 1st Battalion of his regiment on the Western Front in the Great War, and was Mentioned in Despatches five times.


Lot 240

An interesting and most unusual Saudi Arabian British Military Mission C.B.E., and 1944 Normandy ‘Immediate’ Armoured Car M.C. group of ten to Colonel K.F. Timbrell, 1st Royal Dragoons, Royal Armoured Corps


Lot 243

A Second War D.S.O., ‘Immediate’ D.F.C., and Bar group of six to Bomber Pilot, later Night Fighter Ace with seven British Airspace Victories to Group Captain G.L. ‘Raffy’ Raphael, Royal Air Force, who was tragically killed in a mid-air-collision, in April 1945.


Lot 245

Amongst the Campaign Groups and Pairs is a Crimea group of three to Troop Sergeant Major W. Dawn, 8th Hussars, who charged with the Light Brigade at Balaklava, 25th October 1854.


Lot 267

Also in this category is the group of four to Major-General W.H.R. Simpson, Royal Artillery

Two Collections of note included in the sale are a fine run of Naval medals and Medallions and a number of single medals and groups to the Parachute Regiment and Army Air Corps:

Selling Medals by Private Treaty
Although sale at auction of orders, medals and decorations is very successful, some clients still lean towards sale by private treaty. We at Spink are most interested in the straight purchase of both collections and individual items and will be pleased to discuss such arrangements.
