AUCTION NEWS

HMS Coventry: a delayed blast blew the heart out of the ship and she began listing before the seas claimed her and the lives of 19 crewWe are currently in the midst of cataloguing our 24 November auction. Some highlights were on view at the OMRS convention and the item that attracted most attention was the Falklands M.I.D. Group of Three to Lieutenant (later Lieutenant Commander R.N.R.) C.J. Pollard, Royal Navy. Lieutenant Pollard served as Missile and Gun Direction Officer in H.M.S. Coventry, a type 42 Destroyer during the Falklands Campaign.

With H.M.S. Broadsword, the Coventry was protecting troop ships landing men and supplies when they were attacked by Argentinian Skyhawks. Pollard successfully locked onto two of the leading aircraft and brought them both down. The remaining aircraft flew off. Later the Coventry was again attacked, and sunk with the loss of 19 killed and 25 injured of her crew of 280. The general consensus at the convention was that with an estimate of £3,000 the group was very tempting indeed.

Lieutenant Pollard’s medals

Among the collections that have been consigned are a small collection of Queen's South Africa Medals 1899-1902 with some scarce clasps and rare and interesting clasp combinations; a small clutch of naval campaign medal groups; and a run of Police Medals, which includes some King's Police Medals.

Spink Host London Branch Meetings of the Orders and Medals Research Society

Spink will continue to host meetings of the London Branch of the Orders & Medals Research Society. At the meeting on 13 September members heard a most interesting and illuminating talk by Nigel Haines, Publicity Supervisor at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 8 November. As usual there will be the opportunity to talk about and handle medals in a relaxed environment. All members of the OMRS are welcome to join. It is important to arrive between 5.30-6.00pm as it will not be possible to gain access to the building once the premises are locked at the close of business.

Enquiries about the Branch and its activities should be addressed to: Bob Barltrop (01582 715472) or Stan Bates (01226 790723/email stanbates@aol.com).

A MANUAL FOR THE WEARING OF ORDERS, DECORATIONS AND MEDALS
by Andrew Hanham
London: Spink Ltd, 2005. Softback, 130 pages, b&w illustration

This updated new Manual continues the fine tradition of its predecessors and presents a wealth of detailed but clear information on the often complex matter of the wearing of orders, decorations and medals. Previous editions of this publication have been of great help to those required to wear awards on formal occasions as well as to collectors. Due to a number of changes in the British awards system since the last edition, this updated Manual has been eagerly awaited. Compiled by Andrew Hanham, who has a great deal of knowledge of this subject, the new edition will maintain the volume's status as a pre-eminent work of reference.

MAYHEM IN THE MED: A CHRONICLE OF THE CYPRUS EMERGENCY

by Richard G.M.L. Stiles
London: Savannah Publications, 2005. Hardcase, 392 pages, ISBN 1 902366 38 7, b&w photographs. Price: £28

This title has been produced to mark the 50th anniversary of the commencement of that troubled period known as the Cyprus Emergency 1955-60. The book takes the form of a daily newspaper which allows the reader to experience events as unfolding news stories. Editorial comment provides a fuller context and the background information necessary for the complete comprehension of this conflict. As the sovereign power, Britain's response was to conduct an anti-terrorist operation. This involved troops from all the British armed services - Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force - as well as the British Police Force. These operations in Cyprus were especially dependent upon young national servicemen.
Over the five-year Emergency, many regiments, squadrons, ships and other units were deployed and are often mentioned in the text. The work is illustrated by a number of photographs, some previously unpublished and many provided by those who served in Cyprus at the time. This volume will be of great interest to those who were on the island during this period, as well as to historians and military collectors.
Appendices include: Honours and Awards, including Mentions-in-Despatches (about 900 names); Roll of Honour (about 400 names); Unit Deployments
