A large and impressive collection of Italian coins is
offered in our auction on June 30th.
Concentrating mainly on 19th and 20th century coins, it includes many
of the classic rarities, for example all four of the 1926 gold 100, 50,
20 and 10 lire, and some very rare dates of the minor coins. Early Italian
coins are also included, especially a good selection of coins from Genoa.
The entire afternoon session, of nearly 500 lots, is devoted to the Italian
collection.
Other coins of note include an Austrian 10 ducats of 1674
(estimate £5,000-7,000). This large and handsome piece is remarkable
for its good condition; when multiple ducats are offered they often bear
scratches, usually that of the denomination or test marks. A good collection
of over 130 Anglo-Hanoverian silver coins and other coins
of Brunswick features a very rare 2/3 taler of 1754 in superb condition
(estimate £800-£1,000). An Egyptian gold 5 pounds
of AH 1293 year 1 in extremely fine condition (£2,500-£3,000),
a Chinese gold dollar of 1925 (£4,000-6,000) are
among the other world offerings.
Following on the recent discoveries by metal detectors of the Coenwulf
penny, and a Eugenius solidus on the Isle of Wight, we are pleased
to announce the discovery of another important find from a different
part of the Isle of Wight. An example of the very rare issue of Hog Money,
destined for Bermuda in 1616, has been unearthed. Underneath the superficial
green deposit lies one of the best preserved specimens seen. Usually in
extremely poor condition, with little of the original design left, this
sixpence retains some of the original surface silvering (estimate £6,000-10,000).
We also offer a selection of Greek, Roman, Islamic and Indian
coins. Among the selection of British coins we have a sovereign
of Elizabeth I (£4,000-5,000), an Angel in almost extremely fine
condition (£1,600-1,800), a Pontefract shilling of Charles I, a
fine work 5 guineas of William III - nearly extremely fine at £6,000-£8,000
- and the rare 1953 Maundy set which much accompanying material.
