We
are extremely pleased to announce that the catalogue of the
Samuel King collection of British Gold Coins -
consisting of 217 rarities - is now available. More details
can be found on
our website.
The Louis E. Eliasberg Senior Collection:
World Gold Coins and Medals, 18-19 April 2005
Spink
are pleased to be associated with the famous Eliasberg collection.
The lots vary from rare to unique, with good provenance from
notable American collections. This mix of rarity and provenance,
combined with the current strength in the coin market, should
see strong prices. Collectors have had few opportunities over
the last 100 years to bid on some of these coins, and it
is likely that many of the lots will exceed the estimates.
This
fantastic collection, which consists of over 2,500 gold coins,
covers the whole history of coinage. This is the fourth section
of a collection disposal which started in 1982: the three
sections of American coins have already brought $45 million!
We look forward to a fascinating, landmark sale on the 18
& 19th April.
A link to the catalogue on line can be found
here, and the catalogue can
be ordered at a price of £25.

Hill's Numismatic Report |

March was a hectic time in the Department, with preparations
for the auction on the last day of the month, and many early
viewing appointments with clients keen to see the wonderful
Samuel King Collection. The sale of March 31st started very
strongly with the Ancient British and Continental Celtic coins
which all sold over their estimates. This was followed by
a good section of Ancient Greek, Aksumite and Roman including
some decent aureii and solidii. The Eugenius Solidus was perhaps
the highlight achieving £11,000 hammer.
The Anglo Saxon and British hammered continued the trend
of high prices with every coin selling, and most reaching
a price over their high estimates. The milled also performed
admirably with a number of rare halfcrown varieties on offer
and some rarer bronze coinage, and the Islamic coins also
fared well.
The European medieval and foreign coins sold well too: particularly
in the Russian section where the platinum 12 Roubles fetched
£14,000 hammer. The section of Maltese coins was also
strong with plenty of collector interest.
The whole sale totalled more than 10% over the high estimate
for hammer price and we look forward now to the Eliasberg
and Samuel King sales in April and early May. Eliasberg consists
over over 2,000 world gold coins including some British; and
the Samuel King is 217 lots of the very best and largest denominations
in the British gold series. The King collection is very exciting,
with a total estimate of £1.2 million. A review of the
results of the Eliasberg and Samuel King auctions will follow
in next months report.
At the end of April, Max Tursi and I will visit Tokyo in
Japan for the annual International Fair in the Royal Park
Hotel. This will be my third visit to this fair and I look
forward to seeing many familiar faces at the show.
The market for coins is still strong and long may it remain
so, with more and more collectors becoming interested in this
wonderful hobby.
Until the next report – enjoy your coins.
