Nash, Bengal Army, a Distinguished Regimental Commander in the First Afghan War, the Gwalior Campaign and the First and Second Sikh Wars. Lieutenant General Joseph Nash CB (1795-1870) was born in Failsworth, Lancashire and began his illustrious career in the service of the Honourable East India Company. With postings to the 7th Bengal Native Infantry and the 22nd Native Infantry he was present at the siege and capture of the Fort of Malown during the Nepal Campaign and was also commended for his services in the storming of Nagpore, 20 December 1817 (Third Maharatta War). On two notable occasions he commanded a company of Pioneers at the siege and capture of Asseerghur (1819), where once again he was officially commended, and at the capture of Lainba during operations in Jodhpur. Having advanced to the rank of Major and assumed command of the 43rd Native Infantry, he led his Regiment throughout the campaign in Afghanistan (1840-42) including the attack and repulse on the cantonments at Candahar (where he was wounded) and at the second capture of Ghuznee. On the 15 September 1842, whilst acting as rearguard to General Nott¹s army, a detachment under Major Nash was attacked by an overwhelming enemy force of 8,000. The successful repulse of the enemy troops once again brought praise to Nash; his further conduct at the assault of Istaliff meant that he was mentioned in Major General McCask¹s Afghanistan Despatches (London Gazette 6.12.1842). He further led his regiment at the battle of Maharajpoor, and at the capture of the entrenchments at Sobraon where his charger was killed under him. He was awarded a CB as a result of these actions, and further distinguished himself at the assault and capture of Mooltan, where he was severely wounded. • A Desert Rats CB, DSO, OBE group of eleven to Major General G.S.
Hatton, Royal Engineers. • A Dambuster OBE, DFC and Bar group of seven to Group Captain Ivan Whittaker, 617 Squadron Royal Air Force. For DortmundEms Canal, Antheor Viaduct, Elmas and Cagliari Operations. Group Captain Ivan Whittaker OBE, DFC and Bar, was born in 1921, Walkerville, Newcastle. Having joined the Royal Air Force aged 18 as an apprentice in 1938 he went on to fly with Squadron Leader Micky Martin on the Dambuster Raid and received his awards for a culmination of missions on various enemy strategic positions, during one of which he was badly wounded in both legs. In the post-war years he was employed on flights carrying various VIPs, including Prime Minister Attlee. This month a new work of reference for medal collector is: CASUALTY ROLL FOR THE ZULU AND BASUTO WARS: South Africa 1877-79
This classic work has long been out of print. Previously available only in hardback, it has now been republished as a softcover edition. This roll is the most comprehensive published reference to the Colonial and Imperial battle casualties sustained during the Zulu and Basuto Wars in South Africa 1877-79. Compiled from official despatches, medal and muster rolls, soldiers' discharge papers and a variety of books and newspapers, considerable attention has been given to the cross checking of entries from all these sources to minimise the inevitable errors, omissions and duplications. Divided into two sections - Colonial and Imperial - each entry is listed alphabetically by regiment and rank, with the nature, date and location of casualty. Casualties to the Royal Navy are listed similarly but alphabetically by ship. ELANDSLAAGTE: ACCOUNT AND MEDAL ROLL
