British Battles and Medals The response to our appeal for information to help in the preparation of the next edition of 'British Battles and Medals' has been excellent. Thank you to those who have submitted corrections and additional information. Everyone will receive a letter of thanks in due course. Many letters and emails have included a considerable amount of detailed material and some collectors have even gone to the trouble of photocopying pages from the last edition of British Battles and Medals and making their corrections directly on the page which is most helpful. Any help is most welcome. Here again are the details of what we are looking for from
medal collectors and others: An Editorial Team (Richard Bishop, John Hayward
and Diana Birch) is currently working on a new edition of British Battles
and Medals. The improvements made to each successive edition of this key
reference work have relied heavily on the knowledge of many specialist
collectors. To ensure that the forthcoming edition is the most accurate
and useful of all, again the Editors will be dependent to a large extent
upon the cooperation and help of collectors. The Editorial Team is seeking
information on the following: Please include the provenance of any information you send as it is important that the new edition acknowledges all necessary references (in the case of books and journals, give the title, name of author, publisher, place and date of publication). The Editorial Team looks forward to hearing from collectors. The names of those who assist in the preparation of this new edition will be acknowledged in the book itself. The deadline for information is 31 December 2003. All information to:

Medal Yearbook 2004 The new edition of this ever popular Yearbook is once again available in a new edition. It follows the usual and well tried format containing descriptions, photographs and valuations for all British and Empire orders, decorations, campaign and long service medals, life saving and a host of other awards. It also features the current medals of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Available from the Spink Book Department.
Home Guard List 1941 The Home Guard, created in July 1940 from the Local Defence Volunteers, was not entitled to use military ranks until February 1941. All Officers were then listed in the Home Guard List which was published in seven separate sections, each covering one of the Military Commands within the United Kingdom.. Each separate Command List gives details of the relevant units proceeding down the chain of command from Areas to Zones, Groups and Battalions. Officers together with their Decorations are listed by rank. At the end of each List, there are an alphabetical index to Officers and a small section listing Officers who had recently died. The Home Guard List 1941 adds yet another dimension to the published research available to military historians and collectors who can now trace Home Guard service and especially Defence Medal entitlement for many Officers - perhaps adding a Defence Medal to a deserving group. For local historians researching local personalities and for family historians, these volumes will enable them, for the first time, to track down the commissioned service of their relatives and others who served with this unique force. The seven volumes in this series are: Volume 1: Eastern Command - Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Isle of Ely, Norfolk, Suffolk (£12) Volume 2: London District - Greater London Area (£16) Volume 3: Northern Command - County Durham, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Yorkshire (£22) Volume 4: Scottish Command (£14) Volume 5: Southern Command - Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Isles of Scilly, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Wiltshire (£16) Volume 6: South Eastern Command - Kent, Surrey, Sussex (£12) Volume 7: Western Command - Cheshire, Cumberland, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Wales, Warwickshire, Westmoreland, Worcestershire (£24)
