Great Britain Stamps and Covers Sale Results 19-20 October 2004
This interesting and varied auction of over 1200 lots realised a total
of hammer price of £756,763, with items being strongly competed for
throughout.
Those
most outstanding included £4,000 for a triple compartment silver
Stamp Box made in Birmingham in 1898; £38,000 for a 1d. Mulready
letter sheet bearing 1d. black used from Wotton-under-Edge with the distinctive
Maltese Cross cancellation; £24,000 for an 1840 Rainbow trial sheet
in deep blue; £34,000 for a 1d. black used on first day cover from
London to Leominster; £40,000 for a “VR” Official 1d.
black unused marginal block of four; £30,000 for an 1852 cover to
Mexico bearing Embossed 1/- block of six and a single; £9,500 for
an 1847-54 embossed 6d. purple wonderfully fresh mint vertical pair; 1867-83
10/- mint at £14,000 and £13,000 paid for a group of five 1935
Silver Jubilee issue colour trials.
  
Commenting after the sale, Richard Watkins, Head of the Stamp Department,
emphasised that once again high prices were being achieved for high quality
stamps and covers.
