Outstanding Prices for Renaissance Medals at Spink

 

An important collection of renaissance medals and plaquettes was sold yesterday afternoon at Spink in London. The sale is thought to be the most significant of its kind to come to auction in some fifty years. Collectors from around the world gathered to participate in the sale and the prices realised indicate the strong demand for renaissance works of art.

Some lots in the sale fetched as much as 24 times their original estimate, reflecting their great rarity and high quality. The sale realised a total of £537,393 for the 174 lots offered.

Bronze medal by Pietro Paolo Romano depicting Giambattista Castaldi on the oberverse and  a naked female figure (Transylvania) on the reverse
